It&#8217;s my take on one of the most useful features from the FilmLight suite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where the idea came from<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.filmlight.ltd.uk\/products\/daylight\/overview_dl.php\">FilmLight&#8217;s Daylight<\/a>, media import rules let you describe once what should happen to a given kind of clip. Then every time new media comes in, the software sorts and prepares it for you. On a dailies or grading setup, that removes a lot of repetitive clicking, and a whole family of small mistakes with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Resolve has nothing like it built in. Lately there&#8217;s been a real frenzy of scripts and plugins aimed at turning Resolve into a tool that fits professional workflows, and this is one of my contributions. For example,&nbsp;<em>if Camera # is B, set the clip color to Orange<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Two conditions when you need them.<\/strong>\u00a0Tick &#8220;And&#8221; to add a second condition; both must match.\u00a0<em>If Shot Frame Rate is 50 and Camera # is C, add a red flag.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Only real values.<\/strong>\u00a0The values you choose from are read from the clips already in your Media Pool, so you only ever pick what&#8217;s actually in the project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rules you keep.<\/strong>\u00a0Each rule can be switched on or off without deleting it, and your rule set is saved between sessions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>All clips or a selection.<\/strong>\u00a0Rules run on every clip in the project, or only on the clips selected in the Media Pool.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plugin opens from Resolve&#8217;s Workspace \u2192 Workflow Integrations menu. You set or tweak your rules, then hit Save and Execute, or just press Enter. Escape saves and closes without running anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"434\" src=\"https:\/\/lucaungaro.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Capture_decran_2026-05-05_a_11.31.52-1024x434.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lucaungaro.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Capture_decran_2026-05-05_a_11.31.52-1024x434.png 1024w, https:\/\/lucaungaro.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Capture_decran_2026-05-05_a_11.31.52-300x127.png 300w, https:\/\/lucaungaro.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Capture_decran_2026-05-05_a_11.31.52-768x325.png 768w, https:\/\/lucaungaro.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Capture_decran_2026-05-05_a_11.31.52.png 1072w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What it can match, and what it can do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rules can filter on eight clip properties:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Resolution<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shot frame rate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Video codec<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Camera # (the camera letter)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Camera type (the camera model)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lens type<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lens number<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LUT used<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And matching clips can get one of five actions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><th>Action<\/th><th>What it does<\/th><\/tr><tr><td>Add to group<\/td><td>Assigns clips to a Color Group. The group must already exist in the project.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Apply grade<\/td><td>Applies the node tree from a DRX file you pick.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Set clip color<\/td><td>Sets the clip color in the Media Pool.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Add flag<\/td><td>Adds a flag of the chosen color.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Pixel aspect ratio<\/td><td>Sets the PAR, as in Clip Attributes: Square, 1.25, 1.33, 1.5, 1.8 or 2.0.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Color groups and grades live on timeline clips, so those two actions apply across every timeline in the project. The other three act directly on the Media Pool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Known limitations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The feature I miss most is applying an Input Sizing Preset. It would be the cherry on the cake, but for reasons I haven&#8217;t figured out, the matching field in Resolve&#8217;s scripting API seems to be read-only. It&#8217;s on standby until I find a way around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Metadata has to be there.<\/strong>\u00a0Rules can only match what Resolve actually reads into each field. Lens and LUT metadata in particular don&#8217;t always land where you&#8217;d expect, so check your clips first.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Values are read at launch.<\/strong>\u00a0If you import new clips while the plugin is open, close and reopen it to refresh the lists.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Two conditions per rule, maximum.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Media Import Rules is free and open source under the MIT license, on&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/lucaungaro\/DaVinci-Resolve-MediaImportRules\">GitHub<\/a>. It needs DaVinci Resolve Studio 18 or later and nothing else: no extra packages to install.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Installing it means copying a single file into Resolve&#8217;s Workflow Integration Plugins folder and restarting Resolve.
